...Explores portraiture by looking beyond the physical body and depicting th subject through memories and interests that are influential in defining their identity.
I created a self-portrait through a visual collaboration between the New Mexican landscape and architectural drawing conventions. The desert landscape and deep earthen colors, highlighted through screen printing techniques, evoke childhood memories. However, the lone scene als carries a sense of reminiscence of days long past. As a counterpoise, the architectural annotations suggest hope through their representation of future ambitions as well as a reminder to keep moving forward. The visual coexistence of these two states may initially see disconnected from the idea of portraiture, but it reveals a more expansive definition of identity in which we ourselves are a composition that is always being shaped and altered by ou experiences as we move through life.
