West End Adaptive Reuse
Project Type: Adaptive Reuse
Date Completed: Fall 2021
Location: Providence, RI
Advisor: Almin Pršic
Collaborator: Lily Gucfa
...Is a partner collaborative project that utilizes adaptive reuse strategies to transform a local abandoned mill building into a community hub that provides housing and services/event spaces for both houseless individuals and current local residents.
The site is located at a point of tension between the houseless community and the city authorities within Providence’s West End where the issue regarding the ianhabitation of space is constantly disputed. Rather than displacing the encampment, which already has an established sense of place attachment to this specific site, the project works to conserve it by revitalizing unused space and utilizing environmental resiliency for sustainability.
The project provides 10 family units, 24 emergency housing rooms, 20 dorms, 7 shared singles, and 12 singles, of which 68% are ADA accessible. In response to the surrounding area largely being a “resource desert”, this proposal includes the following programs to provide support: a soup kitchen, auditorium, co-op market and garden, library, daycare, and career and family counseling center.

West End ComicTo help visualize the project, we also created an 8 page spread synthesis of the experiential qualities of the West End adaptive reuse design. It aims to highlight 5 different points of views of residents living in the mill as they go about their day, interacting with the various support resources, like career advising, co-op market and greenhouses, and daycare and library. Specifically, perspectives are assigned according to who might live in each type of unit: emergency housing, dorm style, single unit, shared single, and family units.
